Lexmark C522N Review

by Paul Jasper

The C522n delivers good performance for a low price, and toner cartridges are easy to replace.

The Lexmark C522n gives small offices ample features for a budget price of $499. It supports both PCL and PostScript. The vertical paper path, with stacked toner cartridges that are easily accessed from a fold-down front door, gives the printer a small footprint.

The main paper drawer holds up to 250 sheets of plain paper, up to legal size. A slot on the front allows you to feed different media a single sheet at a time. For $299, you can add a 500-sheet paper drawer. You can't add a duplexer, however.

This laser printer provides good performance for the price. In our tests the C522n printed text at an above-average 14.3 ppm and color graphics at a healthy 3.8 ppm.

Text quality was good overall, though some letters looked shaved off at the top. Fine italics appeared spotty, but bold characters were distinct. Color graphics printed too light and grainy, but had good shadow detail. Glossy photos showed the same washed-out look and a dithering pattern.

At the time of this writing, Lexmark hadn't set the price for the C522n's replacement toner cartridges. Lexmark ships the printer with 1500-page starter cartridges.

Upshot: Ample features and good performance make this model well suited for small offices, though print quality wasn't at the top of the heap.

Strengths: I was really impressed with this printer, for a very short time. It prints a heck of a lot faster than my old cheap multi-function machine. It is so big and heavy that I thought it would last forever. I am a small company that doesn't print a lot, but I wanted something that I could depend on for a long time. According to what I read, lasers are a lot cheaper per page than an ink jet to operate. I feel like I was duped.

Weaknesses: I haven't printed 500 sheets, and I had to buy black ink ( over $100 ). Now the machine is telling me I need to buy the other 3 colors at $120 each. When I asked Lexmark about this, they said all printers are shipped with "starter ink cartridges", and they don;t even offer a reduced price when buying all 3 colors at the same time

Overall Evaluation: I think Lexmark is scamming everybody, and they think we are too dumb to say anything about it. They can offer their printer a little cheaper by cutting on the ink cartridges, ( cause they figure they got you anyway, since you have to buy their ink ) I am trying to find a way to fill the ink cartridges myself, and never give them any more of my money.

    Strengths: Printouts fine.

Weaknesses: Prints less than 40% of 1,500 printouts as is stated on website before toner is out.

Overall Evaluation: Very poor rating from me. Customer Service from Lexmark was TERRIBLE..Trying to give the run around! The website states for the C522n "Ships with 1,500 starter cartridge for both color and black.
